Heating element is usually composed of a dull or solid cylinder that serves as a spool for the nichrome (nickel-chrome) wire and as a heat capacitor. Mica film (mineral) is used as an electrical insulator between the metal cylinder and separate layers of wound heating wires because it can withstand such high temperatures as 900 °C (1,650 °F).

Differrent kinds of nichrome wire exist varying in the used alloy and thicknesses having different resistance but generally ranging from around 0.07 Ohms/ft for a 10 AWG wire to 70 Ohms/ft for a 40 AWG wire.

Heatings elements are used in various products but mostly are available as replacement parts for soldiering irons, hot-glue guns. In case of temperature controlled soldiering stations thermocouples are integrated directly in the element.
